LOS ANGELES – Senior Alicia Brown hit a fifth-inning grand slam to give the Loyola Marymount softball team (11-12-1) an 8-0 mercy win against the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (3-19) on Sunday in a postponed game that was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Hannah Bandimere earned the shutout win on the mound for the Lions with five strikeouts as she moved to 7-4 on the season.
Molly Grumbo was the first to score for the Lions in the bottom of the first, reaching home on an error by Southern Utah’s shortstop. LMU scored three more runs in the third, the first one coming as Maddison Flores reached home on a Delanie Wisz bunt. Andrea Gonzalez had a base hit and RBI next as Grumbo scored once again, and then Shianne Ybarra hit a sacrifice fly to left field which brought Wisz home on the play to make it 4-0.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Brown hit the grand slam to left center which ended the game in a mercy at 8-0 as Ybarra, Sabrina Tebou and Gonzalez were all brought home on the play along with Brown.
The Lions split the first weekend of the LMU Tournament, going 2-2 after defeating Providence and Southern Utah and falling to Florida Gulf Coast and Harvard.
In the first tournament game of the day, Southern Utah defeated Harvard 9-3.
The Lions next take the field when they host Ohio State this Tuesday, March 13 for a doubleheader at 12 and 2:30 p.m.
