LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU softball team extended its winning streak to 11 games with a doubleheader sweep of Canisius this afternoon at Smith Field. Margo Pineda was 3-for-3 with three RBI to help the Lions to a 7-5 win in game one. Kirsten Whitt hit two home runs, including an inside the park homer, to lead the Lions to a 7-2 win in game two. In addition, sophomore Kirsten Slouber had a hit in both games to extend her hitting streak to 17 straight games.
The Lions are now 23-11 on the year, and Canisius wraps up its California road trip with a 7-12 record.
LMU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. With runners at second and third, Tracy Cook singled through the infield to bring both runs in and give the Lions the early lead. The Lions extended their lead to 4-0 in the third. Megan Ackerman's two RBI double to deep left center brought in Cook and Christine Foley.
The Golden Griffins scored an unearned run in the fourth to make it 4-1, but the Lions answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff walk to Tiffany Gonzales followed by a bunt single by Slouber gave LMU two runners on base. They advanced on a sacrifice by MiaSarah Cesena and both runs came home on a hard hit single off the Canisius pitcher by Pineda.
Canisius cut the Lion lead in half in the sixth inning with a two-run home run by Jamie Gerace. A Pineda RBI double gave the Lions a 7-3 cushion headed into the top of the seventh. The Griffs would continue to fight in the seventh, scoring two runs before relief pitcher Tiffany Pagano forced Angela Turrey to strikeout to end the game.
The Griffins outhit LMU 10-6, but stranded seven runners on base. Pineda had half of LMU's three hits, including a double. Ackerman and Cook each drove in two runs, while Slouber and Cesena scored twice.
Melissa Dykema (15-5) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Pagano earned her first save of the season, allowing one hit and striking out one in 1.0 innings of work.
Katie Miranto led off game two with a triple and came around to score on an error to give Canisius its first lead of the weekend. LMU didn't allow the Griffins to lead for long, scoring in the bottom of the inning. Slouber led off with a single and would come around to score on a wild pitch to tie the game up, 1-1.
A two-run home run by Whitt gave the Lions a 3-1 lead in the second inning. Whitt's bat and her legs helped the Lions extend the lead to 6-1 in the third. Foley led off the inning with a single and Chelsie Tysdal got on base with a single to right field. With two runners on and two outs, Whitt hit a high ball that stayed just fair of the right field line. The Canisius right fielder Turrey dove to catch the ball, but just missed it and the ball traveled into the right field corner. Whitt was able to go around all of the bases for her first career inside the park home run.
Pineda led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field to give the Lions a 7-1 lead. Canisius scored its second unearned run of the game in the sixth to cut the lead to 7-2, but Pagano was able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh to earn the win. She improves to 9-6 on the season, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with six strikeouts and eight walks on the day.
Whitt finished the day 2-for-2 with five RBI and two runs scored. The Lions outhit Canisius 11-3 in game two, with Slouber, Pineda and Foley each finishing with two hits.
With a bunt single in the first game, and a leadoff single in the second game, Slouber extended her hitting streak to 17 games. The last time she was held without a hit was on February 24th against Long Island at the Palm Springs Tournament. Over the last 17 games, she is hitting .435 (27-for-62) with two home runs, two triples and 17 runs scored.
LMU will wrap up its 12 game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts Ohio State in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
