LOS ANGELES - Freshman Amanda Dirks launched her first collegiate grand slam and fellow rookie Rachael Farrington picked up her first win of the season in the pitching circle as the LMU softball team held on for a 6-3 win over Harvard Wednesday at Smith Field.
Dirks gave the Lions (14-10) a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the first with her second home run of the year. Breeanna Sandoval led off the inning with a single up the middle, Alex Finie singled to left and Sterling Shuster was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Dirks then stepped to the plate and sent the 1-0 pitch over the left field fence.
Errors would plague the Lions in Harvard's half of the fifth as the Crimson pushed three runs across the plate on two hits and three LMU errors.
With their lead trimmed to just one, 4-3, the Lions would battle back in the bottom of the fifth as Finie began a two-out rally with a double to right field. Meghan Harman would reach on an infield single and Shsuter singled down the left field line to score Finie. Dirks would then reach on an error that also allowed Harman to cross home plate and the Lion lead was back to three, 6-3.
Farrington (1-4) went the distance in the circle, scattering seven hits while fanning five. All three runs she allowed were unearned.
Harman and Finie each finished with a pair of hits while Dirks led the way with four RBIs.
The Lions return to action Thursday as play at the LMU Invitational II continues. LMU will face Canisius at 1 p.m. and Bethune-Cookman at 3 p.m.
