Lions Come Up Short, Fall 5-2 to 49ers.
LMU `s hot offense is halted by Long Beach State
March 21, 2012
Los Angeles, Calif. --
The hard hits of the LMU batting order were no match for Long Beach State as the Lions fell 5-2 in a defensive battle. The Lions (20-11) were held to only two runs throughout seven innings, off of six hits, including a solo home run by the current number one hitter in the nation, Sam Fischer.
Long Beach State bats went to work on starting pitcher Dana Waldusky early, putting the Lion defense to the test. In the first two innings the Lions gave up five runs off four hits. The 49ers were able to convert two of the Lions three fielding and throwing errors into runs, giving them a 5-0 lead right away.
RHP Stevie Goldstein came in midway through the second inning to relieve Waldusky and was able to get the Lion's out of the second inning before any more runs could be scored. Goldstein went a season high 5.2 innings, giving up two hits and striking out two. Goldstein's highlights included a four-pitch inning in the top of the sixth.
The Lions earned their first run in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior shortstop Sam Fischer, who currently leads the nation in batting average, second in slugging and on base percentage (as of March. 18th), connected on an inside fastball that she sent over the wall. This is Fischer's 14th homer of the season and 56th overall.
Midway through the fifth inning Kylie Ahlo put the Lions in scoring position with a double to left field. Following right after, sophomore Sam Nelson went opposite Ahlo and doubled to right field, driving in Ahlo and the Lion's second run.
The Lion's were unable to connect for any more runs as Long Beach State pitcher Erin Jones-Wesley threw with power and force, striking out three, pitching all seven innings. Both Fischer and head coach Gary Ferrin noted Jones-Wesley as, "a tough pitcher to hit against"
Junior Dana Waldusky took the loss for the Lions (6-4). The Lion's record stands at 20-11 as they head into their final non-conference double header against Cal State Northridge on Saturday. Games begin at approximately 12pm and 2pm.
