MORAGA, Calif. - The LMU softball team concluded its inaugural West Coast Conference opening weekend with a 3-0 setback at Saint Mary's Sunday afternoon in Moraga.
The Lions' (19-17, 0-3 WCC) best opportunity to jump on the board was in the top of the second with the score still knotted at zero. With the bases loaded an just one out, LMU was unable to convert as the Gaels finished off the inning by recording a fly out double play.
Saint Mary's (15-17, 3-0 WCC) opened the home half of the second with back-to-back doubles, the second of which sent the first run across home plate. The Gaels would add one more run in the frame off a sacrifice fly.
Leading 2-0, SMC added an insurance run in the third. Relief pitcher Stephanie Crist would allow just two hits in the final three frames, but the Lion battery was never able to counter the early runs.
Six Lions tallied one hit apiece while eight different Gaels collected a hit in the game.
LMU brings WCC action home to Smith Field next week, hosting Pacific in a three-game set on Saturday and Sunday.
