LOS ANGELES - Stephanie Maciel delivered an eighth-inning, walk-off RBI single Sunday, giving the LMU softball team a 3-2 win over visiting Pacific in the West Coast Conference series finale at Smith Field.
The victory was the first in WCC play for LMU, which improved to 20-19 overall and 1-5 in league play. The Tigers fell to 15-23 overall and 4-2 in the WCC.
After a pair of offensive battles on Saturday, Sunday's series finale featured just 12 combined hits.
LMU jumped on the board in the bottom of the first courtesy a two-out solo home run by Sterling Shuster.
Pacific tied the game in the fourth, manufacturing an unearned run on a pair of hits and an LMU error. The Lions would swipe the lead right back in the bottom of the fifth on a Meghan von Behren home run.
The Tigers struck again in the sixth as a pair of LMU fielding errors allowed the tying run across home plate once again.
Then came the bottom of the eighth. Meghan Harman would lead off with a four-pitch walk and a one-out Shuster single to center put runners on first and second. Alex Finie grounded out to the pitcher, but allowed the runners to advance a base, setting the stage for Maciel. The sophomore shortstop swatted at the first pitch she saw, lofting the ball into shallow left field and allowing Harman to cross home plate.
Shuster and Maciel both finished with two hits and one RBI. Rachael Farrington (6-7) was credited with the win in the pitching circle. The rookie struck out two, walked one and scattered seven hits while not allowing an earned run.
West Coast Conference play continues Friday and Saturday as the Lions travel to San Diego for a three-game series.
