PROVO, Utah - On their final road trip of the 2014 season, the LMU softball team dropped its first two games in a three-games West Coast Conference series at BYU, 13-5 (6 inn) and 8-1, Friday evening.
The Lions fell to 20-24 overall and 1-10 in WCC play while the Cougars improved to 24-21 overall and 6-2 in the WCC.
In the opener, BYU struck with an unearned run in the bottom of the first, but LMU responded as Sterling Shuster sent a pair across home plate in the third with a one-out single to center.
The Cougars would tie the score in the home half of the inning, then go ahead 4-2 in the fourth. An RBI-single by Ander Lopez in the fifth brought the Lions to within one, but the Cougars exploded for six runs in the fifth to open up a 10-3 advantage.
LMU's Stephanie Crist launched a two-run home run in the top of the sixth but BYU tacked on three more in the sixth to earn the mercy rule victory.
Meghan Harman and Breeanna Sandoval each had a pair of hits while Shuster and Crist led the Lions with two RBIs apiece. Rachael Farrington (6-10) took the loss after giving up eight hits and eight runs (seven earned) in 4.1 innings.
Following a lengthy lightning delay prior to the start of the nightcap, the Cougars would again score a single run in the first, and then open things up with a four-run third and three-run sixth. LMU pushed its lone run across the plate in the sixth on an RBI-single by Shuster that scored Meghan von Behren.
Crist (1-11) took the complete-game loss for the Lions. Shsuter finished with two hits in the game while four others tallied one hit apiece.
The series concludes Saturday at noon with the final game airing on BYUtv.
