PORTLAND, Ore. - Tiffany Pagano did not allow a hit until the fifth inning of game one, but Portland State hit back to back home runs in the sixth inning for the 3-0 victory in game one of the makeup doubleheader in PCSC action this evening in Portland. The Vikings secured a 2-0 win in the nightcap.
Portland State is now one victory away from securing the PCSC championship. LMU can spoil PSU's bid for the conference title with a win in Saturday's final makeup games.
Today's game were makeup games from a rained out four game series in April. LMU and PSU were able to play one game before rain forced the series to be postponed. The two teams will wrap up the regular season with one more game on Saturday at 11:00am.
Game one remained scoreless until the sixth inning. In fact, Pagano did not allow a PSU hit until the fifth inning. However, game one starter Mandy Hill broke the scoreless tie with a two run home run in the sixth. Kimi Daniel followed it up with a solo shot to make it a 3-0 PSU lead.
Hill was solid in the circle as well, limiting the Lions to just two hits in the contest with one walk. Hillaree Bennett doubled to lead off the seventh inning, but the Lions could not bring the run home.
The second game was similar to the first. The game was tied at 0-0 until the fourth inning. Daniel scored on an RBI single by Katie Stokes to put the Vikings ahead, 1-0.
PSU added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Jamee Rauch drew a walk from Lion starter Samantha Lavino, and scored on an RBI groundout by Laura Segall.
Michelle Hext recorded the shutout for PSU, allowing just four Lion hits. Lavino took the loss for LMU, allowing two runs on six hits and five walks.
LMU now sits at 29-23 on the season, 9-10 in PCSC play. Portland State is 36-18, 14-5 in the conference.
The teams will conclude the regular season with one final game on Saturday at 11:00am. A Portland State victory will give the PCSC title and the NCAA automatic berth to the Vikings. An LMU victory will put Sacramento State into the NCAA tournament with the conference championship.
