LOS ANGELES – Loyola Marymount softball (33-24-1) picked up its second win of the NISC championship round today, handing UC Riverside (38-23) its first loss of the NISC tournament with a 2-0 win at Smith Field.
Senior Alicia Brown continued her hot NISC play, busting the game open with a solo home run in the top of the second to put LMU on top 1-0.
LMU increased its lead to 2-0 in the third as freshman Maddie Flores slid into home on a wild pitch by UCR, and the Lions left the rest up to pitching and defense to shut down the Highlanders.
Junior pitcher Hannah Bandimere threw a seven-inning gem for the Lions. She allowed just two hits and struck out four batters in the shutout win, and now has a record of 23-12 on the season. The LMU defense came up clutch altogether to secure the victory and spot in the NISC championship game.
With the win, LMU advances to the NISC Championship on Friday at 11:00 a.m. PT. The Lions will once again face UC Riverside after the Highlanders defeated Eastern Kentucky 7-1 in this afternoon’s elimination game. If LMU takes the 11:00 a.m. game tomorrow, they secure the NISC championship, but if they’re unable to get the win, they will play a second game against UCR at 1:30 p.m. PT to close out the tournament.
