LOS ANGELES - The 2014 LMU softball season gets underway this week as the Lions take part in the Cal State Fullerton Easton I Invitational on Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8.
Excitement surrounds the new era of softball for the Lions as they compete for the first time ever under the umbrella of the West Coast Conference. After placing second last spring in their final season competing in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, the Lions were the WCC's preseason No. 3 pick behind BYU and Pacific.
This spring will be a season of growth for an LMU squad that features just two seniors, two juniors and 21 total freshmen and sophomores. Leading the charge will be sophomore pitcher Sydney Gouveia, junior seconds baseman Sterling Shuster and senior third baseman Meghan Harman. All three, along with sophomore outfielder Hannah Montalban, were named to the Preseason All-WCC team. Gouveia was the PCSC Pitcher of the year as a rookie last spring, while Shuster was named Co-Player of the Year.
The Lions' mettle will be tested right out of the gates this weekend as their slate of opponents in Fullerton includes the reigning Women's College World Series champs Oklahoma and preseason No. 12 Kentucky.
