Softball Begins 12-Game Florida Stint

LOS ANGELES - Continuing their season-opening 22-game road swing, the LMU softball team heads to Clearwater, Fla., where they will play 12 games over a 10-day span. The Lions begin with the USF Under Armour Invitational March 1-3, play a pair of neutral site games against Maine and Toledo on March 6, then wrap up the trip at the USF Under Armour Showcase March 8-10.

LMU enters the trip with a 4-6 record, having gone 3-2 at the Red Desert Classic on opening weekend and 1-4 last week at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs.

Two top 25 teams were on the Lions docket last week and they will face one more on this trip when the meet No. 17/19 Kentucky in their third game of the USF Under Armour Invitational. Additional opponents in the first tournament include Central Michigan, Providence, Illinois and Central Connecticut.

LMU's opponents in the second USF tournament will be Penn State, Long Island, Central Michigan, Tennessee-Chattanooga and Northwestern.

Entering the week, sophomore second baseman Sterling Shuster leads the Lions at the plate with a .414 batting average. In 10 games, Shuster has 12 hits, including three doubles, while scoring a pair of runs and collecting four RBIs.

Also batting over .300 are senior Olivia Alvarez and junior Meghan Harman. Alvarez has one double and a team-high six RBIs to her name while Harman ties for the team lead with two home runs. As a team, the Lions are batting .259.

The Lions' pitching staff holds a combined .375 ERA. Dana Waldusky has a pair of wins to her credit, including one shutout. Sydney Gouveia is 1-1 with 22 strikeouts in 17 innings and Molly Medeiros is 1-1 with a 3.71 ERA in four appearances.
