SOFTBALL RETURNS TO MAINLAND FOR SWEEP OF RIVERSIDE
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (March 14, 2001) -- The Loyola Marymount University softball team returned to the mainland for a doubleheader sweep of UC Riverside on Wednesday afternoon. The Lions took game one 18-0 and then the "nightcap" 4-3. The Lions pounded out 11 hits in getting their highest run total in program history in the shutout victory. Jennifer Heliotes pitched four innings and Jaime Lyons completed the shutout in the run-shorted contest. Offensively, Lyons helped LMU with two hits, including a triple and three RBI. They had help, as Riverside finished game one with seven errors. Game two was a complete reversal of the first, as the Lions came from behind by scoring a single run in the final three innings for the win. Trailing 3-1 thanks to a pair of runs by Riverside in the first and another in the second, the Lions started the rally in the fifth with a run scored by Lisa Abbott who began the inning with a single. She scored on an RBI hit by Erin Hogan. The rally continued in the sixth with a run scored by Anna Trauernicht, her second of the game. She scored her first run in the first inning after hitting a triple. She reached on an error and scored on Lyons line drive single to tie the game.
The game winner was scored Hogan, who walked. The winning run was driven in by an RBI single by Laura Eckley. In the game, Abbott finished 2-for-3.
