LOS ANGELES - The first ever season of West Coast Conference softball action begins this weekend as the Lions travel to Moraga, Calif., for a three-game series at Saint Mary's. The teams open with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon, then close with a single game Sunday at noon.

LMU closed out the non-conference portion of the 2014 season with a 19-14 record and enter conference play as the lone WCC member with a winning record. The Lions were the preseason pick to finish third in the six-team league behind BYU (five first place votes) and Pacific (one first place vote).

The Lions enter WCC play having won three of their last five games. Senior third baseman Meghan Harman leads the squad at the plate, batting .359 with 28 hits, 20 runs, three doubles and nine home runs. With 15 regular-season games remaining, her nine long balls already matches her single-season best, set one year ago.

Sterling Shuster's bat has also come alive as of late, as the junior second baseman is hitting at a .343 clip. Breeanna Sandoval, who had a pair of game-winning hits last week, is hitting .294.

In the pitching circle, freshman Rachael Farrington holds a 5-6 record with a 4.55 ERA in 19 appearances, including 11 total starts. Stephanie Crist and Andy Wellins have combined for 20 appearances and have each tallied one win.

The Lions and Gaels are no strangers to meeting in conference play, as both were members of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference. Since the 1989 season, LMU holds a 53-30 record against SMC. Last year in a four-game PCSC set, LMU swept the series after the Gaels won all four in 2012.
