LOS ANGELES - Freshman pitcher Sydney Gouveia earned selection to the 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Pacific Region Second Team, the association announced Thursday. This marks the third consecutive year that the LMU softball team has placed a player on the all-region team.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2013 NFCA Division I All-American teams.
Gouveia, the only player from the Pacific Coast Softball Conference to earn selection, had an outstanding rookie season for the Lions. In 33 total appearances, she went 18-4 with a 1.82 ERA, 18 complete games, six shutouts and 269 strikeouts. She also held opposing batters to a .190 average, tossed three one-hitters and reached double-digit strikeouts 13 times.
The Arroyo Grande, Calif., native set an LMU record with 22 single-game strikeouts, ranks No. 2 in single-season strikeouts, No. 6 in career strikeouts and is currently No. 4 nationally in strikeouts per seven innings (10.9). She is now the 13th Lion all-time to earn NFCA All-Region honors.
