LOS ANGELES -- Loyola Marymount University will host the 2018 National Invitational Softball Championship at Smith Field this week from Wednesday, May 23 through Friday, May 25. LMU softball (31-24-1, RPI 75) is one of four teams competing for the NISC Championship along with Eastern Kentucky (43-20, RPI 70), UC Riverside (36-22, RPI 100) and UT Arlington (30-26, RPI 83). Each of the four teams won their NISC regional championship to advance.
The championship round will begin on Wednesday with LMU facing off against UT Arlington at 11 a.m. and UC Riverside taking on Eastern Kentucky at 1:30 p.m. PT.
The two losing teams on Wednesday will match up on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the losers bracket, while the winning teams will battle in the winners bracket at 12:30 p.m. The loser of the 12:30 p.m. game will then play the winner of the winner of Thursday morning's game on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. to earn a spot in the championship game on Friday. The winner of Thursday's 12:30 p.m. game will advance to the championship as well.
The championship game will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. with a second game to follow at 1:30 p.m. if necessary. A full bracket for this week's NISC games is included at the top of the page.
Adult all-tournament passes are $25 and youth/student passes are $15, while single-day tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for youth/students. LMU competed in the Northern Colorado Regional of the NISC last weekend, becoming the regional champions and earning a spot in the championship round which they now host. LMU went 3-1 in the regional round, defeating Northern Colorado once and South Dakota State twice while losing once to SDSU as well.
Senior Alicia Brown was named the NISC regional MVP after finishing the weekend with a slugging percentage of 1.167 and batting average of .583 with seven hits including two home runs and a team-high seven RBI while scoring four runs.
Brooke Christensen, Sabrina Tebou, Linnay Wilson and Delanie Wisz were all named to the NISC All-Regional Team after their stellar performances. Christensen had three hits with one home run and three RBI in the regional while making several clutch defensive plays.
Tebou also stood out on the defensive end while nailing a grand slam in LMU's comeback victory to open the NISC. She finished the weekend with four hits and five RBI.
Wilson racked up an impressive 18 strikeouts in just 12.0 innings pitched over LMU's four games while allowing just six hits and two earned runs to finish with an NISC regional ERA of 1.17.
Wisz went 9-for-12 at the plate in the regional and had team highs in batting average (.750), slugging percentage (1.667), hits (9), runs scored (8) and home runs (3) in the postseason tournament. She now has a team-high 11 home runs on the season.
The Lions look to continue with this positive momentum as they play for the national championship right at home at Smith Field.
