Los Angeles, CA (June 3) - Loyola Marymount University senior Evan Shahak and sophomore Margo Pineda were named the LMU/Enterprise Rent-A-car Student-Athletes of the Month for April/May, the final two months of competition in the 2004-05 academic year. Both student-athletes led their teams on postseason runs to close the season.
Shahak hit .429 on the month as the Lions' designated hitter, helping the Lions to a program record for the hottest regular season finish by winning 14 of their last 16 in the regular season. The senior added 13 RBI, eight runs scored, five doubles, one home run, three sacrifice flies and was 1-for-1 in stolen base attempts.
As LMU looked for its second straight Coast Division title against Gonzaga, Shahak led the Lions to the game one win Friday, going 2-for-3 with five RBI. He then went 3-for-4 with two doubles in Sunday's game four against the Zags, helping LMU pull off the four-game sweep. In game one of the WCC Championship Series against rival Pepperdine,
Shahak went 2-for-5 with a home run over the Blue Monster to secure the 1-0 series lead for LMU. He then had a huge pinch-hit RBI double that led the LMU rally in the top of the ninth inning against the Waves on Saturday.
Margo Pineda hit .405 to help lead the Lions to the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Championship and the program's first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. She was named PCSC Player of the Year following the regular season.
In April and May, she went 30-for-74 with six doubles and four home runs in 23 games. Pineda had a 17-game hitting streak to end the regular season which was snapped in LMU's first NCAA Tournament game. She rebounded with a 2-for-3 performance against UNLV, driving home LMU's only run of the game.
Pineda was a hero many times over in PCSC play, driving in the game-tying and game-winning runs in the bottom of the ninth inning against Saint Mary's. She also scored the game-winning run against Sacramento State to clinch the PCSC Championship.
Her solo home run was the difference in LMU's 1-0 win over Santa Clara on April 16th, and she drove in the game-winning run in the 1-0 win over the Broncos the next day. She was named PCSC Player of the Week twice in April, and three times for the season. Pineda led the conference in batting average (.426) in PCSC play, and led LMU in hitting overall with a .351 average.
Each month during the academic calendar, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.) will chose a male and female Enterprise Rent - A - Car student-athlete of the month whose performance best represents the traditions of Loyola Marymount University. Later this summer Loyola Marymount will announce the male and female Athletes of the Year.
