Softball Announces Letter of Intent
Dec. 20, 2005 LOS ANGELES, CA - Loyola Marymount softball head coach Gary Ferrin announced that Melissa Dykema has signed a letter of intent to attend LMU in the fall of 2006. Dykema, a 5-11 right handed pitcher/shortstop from Valley Christian High School, was seventh in the state last year with a .179 ERA and ninth in the state with a .944 winning percentage. "Melissa will be one of the best pitchers in LMU history. She has all of the tools to take us to another level. I feel Melissa was one of the best kept secrets in the country. I saw Melissa play when she was a sophomore and knew that she had the potential to be an instant impact pitcher. I feel extremely fortunate and very lucky to have her coming on board, " said Ferrin. As a junior, Dykema allowed just three earned runs in 117.0 innings of work. She recorded 17 straight victories and finished her season with a 17-1 record. She had double digit strikeouts in 12 games, including a season-high 19 in a 1-0 win over Alhambra. She finished the year with 201 strikeouts. The Lions are coming off of a PCSC Championship and their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2005. This year, the team will play in its brand new home, Smith Field. The Lions open their season in February in Hawaii, and will play their first home game against the University of Pennsylvania on March 7th in the opening game of the LMU Tournament.
