April 2, 2012
SANTA MONICA, Calif. -Litara Keil and Betsi Metter posted a victory in the quarterfinal round of the Pairs Championship. The USC duo of Sara Shaw-Geena Urango won the pairs championship at Santa Monica's Annenberg Community Beach House.
USC improved to 5-1, while Loyola Marymount dropped to 0-3. It was the Trojans' second sweep over the Lions in 2012, as the teams met earlier this month in the historic first-ever match for both schools in the new NCAA "emerging" sport.
USC did not drop a set in winning all five matches in the morning's team play, which was conducted in cool, misty weather. Troy's No. 4 team of Kendall Bateman-Sam Hirschmann got the first victory, 21-8, 21-10 over Amber Mirabello-Taylor Scioscia, with USC's No. 5 squad of Kati Duddridge-Megan Thornberry following soon thereafter with a 21-7, 21-11 win over Emily Cheek-Ellie Selleck. Shaw-Urango, playing as the No. 1 pair, then posted a 21-12, 22-20 win over Keil-Metter. Katie Fuller-Natalie Hagglund, USC's No. 3 team, then defeated Kenna Crouse-Ashley Maxfeldt, 21-17, 21-15, with Kirby Burnham-Kelly Irvin at the No. 2 spot finishing the sweep with a 21-16, 21-18 win over Felicia Arriola-Caitlin DeWitt.
In the afternoon's pairs tourney, which saw a bright sun break through the clouds midway through the play, Shaw-Urango swept Bateman-Hirschmann in the quarterfinals, 21-15, 21-17, and Fuller-Hagglund in the semifinals, 21-17, 21-17, before beating Burnham-Irvin in the final, 16-21, 21-14, 15-12, in the day's only three-set match.
LMU's only victory of the day came in the quarterfinals, when Keil-Metter beat Duddridge-Thornberry, 21-19, 22-20.
The Lions will return to action on April 14 when they begin play at the USAV Championships in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
