LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU sand volleyball program will officially begin its run as an LMU varsity sport on Saturday, traveling to Santa Monica to take on USC in the program's first match at Santa Monica's Annenberg Community Beach House at 10 a.m.
There will be five matches between pairs in the morning's team competition, while the afternoon will feature bracket play beginning at noon to crown a pairs champion. All matches will be rally scoring best-of-three sets.
LMU is among 20 schools fielding a women's sand volleyball team in 2012 as the sport begins its inaugural season as an NCAA emerging sport. The sport has 10 years to get at least 40 schools to sponsor sand volleyball for two consecutive years and thereby become established as an NCAA championship sport, otherwise the NCAA will conduct a reclassification review of the sport.
LMU's sand volleyball team is made up of a number players from LMU's indoor squad. LMU sophomore Betsi Metter is expected to be one of the more promising players in the sand after showing high levels of success on the beach prior to attending LMU. Metter was a member of the USA Beach Youth National Training Team, and took first place at the AAU National Beach Championships in 2009 for the U18 division. She also earned a first-place finish at the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Beach Championships for the U14 division in 2006.
