Busy Week for Beach Volleyball

March 14, 2017

The LMU beach volleyball team is scheduled to play a pair of matches on Thursday and Saturday as part of a busy week of play. The Lions are coming off a trip to Hawaii in which they went 2-2, posting a pair of victories over then-No. 9 Stetson and dropping two matches to then-No. 5 Hawaii.

While competing at the Outrigger Hawaii Invitational, junior Kristen Castellanos earned the Best Defender award. Teamed with Tatiana Schlange, Castellanos posted a victory over Stetson on Friday.

LMU will head to Long Beach, Calif. on Thursday to play Pepperdine and Long Beach State before traveling to Bakersfield on Saturday for matches against Cal State Northridge and CSU Bakersfield.

Pepperdine is ranked #2 in the AVCA and DiG Magazine poll, while Long Beach checks in at #6 in both polls. The Lions are receiving votes in each poll.

The Lions (4-4) are led by Junior Sarah Sponcil and sophomore Savannah Slattery, who are 5-1 while playing at the top spot. The pair’s only loss came to Hawaii in the second match over the weekend. Sara Kovac and Jessie Prichard are 5-3 as a duo, including 3-0 at the fourth spot.

Following this week’s play, LMU will head to the USC Tournament on March 22.
