Teamed with Ryan Doherty as the first-seed in the tournament, LMU beach volleyball head coach John Mayer won the AVP New Orleans Open men's title last weekend.

The duo beat second-seed and defending champions Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson in the men’s final, 9-21, 21-17, 15-8. Gibb and Patterson also happen to be the team that knocked out Mayer and Doherty at the same event last year.

Doherty and Mayer played in three separate three-set matches on their way to victory in the tournament.

This is the second tournament victory for the duo, as they also won the AVP Kingston Seattle Open in August. In eight AVP tournaments together, Doherty and Mayer have a record of 31-9. Doherty also has made at least the semi-finals in 12 of his last 13 events.

On the women’s side, top seeded Kim DiCello and Kendra VanZwieten claimed the victory 21-19, 19-21, 15-13 over Angela Bensend and Geena Urango.

The duo had a pair of close matches between the final and semi-final when they defeated three-time Olympic gold medalist Misty May-Treanor and Jenny Kropp 21-17, 21-16.

The AVP Tour’s next tournament is May 5-8 at the Huntington Beach Open.
