WCC Beach Volleyball All-Conference Selections

LMU’s top beach volleyball pair of junior Sarah Sponcil and freshman Savannah Slattery took home two of the conference’s top honors on Wednesday, with Sponcil nabbing WCC Player of the Year and Slattery taking home Freshman of the Year.

The duo also found themselves on the first team All-WCC squad as voted on by the WCC coaches. Joining Sponcil and Slattery as All-Conference selections are Sara Kovac and Jessie Prichard, who earned spots on the second team. Prichard and Slattery also claimed a space on the All-Freshman team.

Sponcil and Slattery, who are 9-1 over their last 10 matches, have combined to go 20-9 this year, beating some of the top pairs in the country along the way. Although LMU dropped a pair of matches to Pepperdine in the WCC Championship last weekend, the duo managed to top the Waves’ top team twice in the tournament.

Kovac and Prichard have combined to go 17-13 this year, playing at the #2, #3 and #4 spots in the order. The duo is 3-4 at #2, 9-8 at #3 and 3-0 at #4.

Prior to this season, Sponcil was a 2015 AVCA All-American and played for the National Championship after registering a 26-7 overall record while teamed with current assistant coach Betsi Flint. She did not play for LMU last spring, instead representing Team USA at Manly Beach, Sydney, Australia in the Four Nations U21 Tournament. Partnered with current UCLA Bruin Torrey Van Winden, the pair went 4-0 at the tournament to capture a gold medal.

LMU reached the Championship Final at the WCC Championship tournament last weekend, claiming a runner-up finish behind Pepperdine.
