After reaching the semifinals at the inaugural West Coast Conference Beach Volleyball Championships last weekend, LMU finished the 2016 season ranked in the Top-20 of DiG Magazines poll, checking in at #20 on the list.
Playing at #1 throughout the year, Bush and Suaava went 12-10 overall, including 10-8 in team competition.
Dominique finished 6-15 overall, playing at each of the top four positions in the lineup. She went 3-6 on court four. Dominique played five matches at #1 with Bush, but played the bulk of her time with Whitford, going 4-4.
Saint Mary’s senior Dalas Dodd etched her name in the West Coast Conference record books earning the first Player of the Year award for Beach Volleyball. Dodd’s teammate Mary Hernandez was named Defensive Player of the Year, while first-year Gael Lindsey Knudsen collected Freshman of the Year honors. AVCA Hall-of-Famer Nina Mathies of Pepperdine was voted Coach of the Year.
All four major individual awards – along with the All-West Coast Conference Teams and the All-Freshman Team – were voted on by the league’s seven head coaches.
Dodd had a phenomenal senior season, which culminated in an impressive showing at the inaugural conference championship tournament. Dodd and her partner went 5-1 over the two-day championship including a win against the eventual champions, Pepperdine, on day one. Dodd’s season also highlighted big wins over Stanford, California, and Oregon.
Hernandez showed her skill all season, finishing with a nearly unblemished record of 22-1. Hernandez and her partner were the No. 2 pair for St. Mary’s and went undefeated until their final match.
Knudsen started her collegiate beach career in impressive fashion and headlined the No. 1 pairs team for the entire season. With the amazing teamwork of her partner, Player of the Year Dalas Dodd, Knudsen posted an overall record of 19-4.
A coaching legend indoors and on the beach, Mathies adds the first Beach Coach of the Year award to a trophy case already containing a record 10 WCC Coach of the Year honors with Pepperdine’s indoor squad. Matthies guided the Waves to a No. 1 ranking in the AVCA poll for the bulk of the 2016 campaign and directed the program to a 19-3 record capped by the first WCC Championship.
