San Diego, Calif. - In its first competition since December 3, Loyola Marymount swimming fell to Texas Christian and host San Diego State Friday at the Ray and Joan Croc Community Center. The Lions were outscored 165-117 by TCU and 180-107 to the Aztecs in the three-way meet.
LMU once again surrendered points to both teams during the diving competition, as the Lions do not field a diving team.
The afternoon was highlighted by four first-place finishes by the Lions, including the 200 medley relay team of Lauren Mathewson, Sarah Hamilton, Angela Samuels, and Katie Hicks. Their time of 1:47.31 was just over a tenth of a second off the LMU record and gave them the first place finish in the first race of the day.
Mathewson then earned a first place finish on her own, clocking a time of 57.20 in the 100 back.
Hicks claimed the other two top finishes, taking first in both the 50 free (24.28) and the 100 free (52.53).
Hamilton turned in another strong performance later in the 100 breast, finishing with a time just two-tenths of a second off the LMU record (1:07.29) for second place.
Mathewson and Hicks also joined Maggie Brophy and Liz Magura to finish second in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:40.63.
The three-way dual marked the first competition of 2006 for the Lions, who last faced four teams in a five way dual at San Jose State on December 3. There, LMU defeated UC Santa Cruz 207-86, but fell to Idaho, Nevada Reno, and the host Spartans.
The Lions will continue the Southern California road trip Saturday at San Diego. LMU and USD have already met this season, with both teams participating in the competitive Speedo Cup in Long Beach. The Lions clinched a ninth place finish, while San Diego finished 11th. This will be just the fourth dual meet of the season, where the Lions will face just one other team. LMU enters the meet with a 2-1 dual record.
