Lions Finish Third at Beach Cup
LMU won four individual events on Saturday but finished third at the Beach Cup.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU swimming program recorded four individual victories on Saturday, including a pair of 1-2 finishes, but placed third overall in the team scoring at the 2014 Beach Cup being held at LMU's Burns Aquatics Center. Fresno State won the Beach Cup with 711 points, followed by San Diego at 671, LMU at 585, and Pepperdine at 263.
Kjirsten Magnuson won a pair of events on Saturday, claiming top honors in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.90. She returned to the water in the 100 freestyle, besting San Diego's Jackie Taylor with a time of 52.06.
Freshman Hannah Calton continued her fantastic freshman campaign, helping LMU to a 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly. The native of Granite Bay, Calif. turned in a time of 57.31 to finish ahead of her teammate, Lise Soule, at 57.69. Calton later took third overall in the 200 butterfly, turning in a time of 2:07.30, before Angelina Prat claimed fifth in 2:09.24.
Rachel Dekar and Mary Kate Reid managed to post the second 1-2 finish for the Lions, doing so in the 100 breaststroke. Dekar, who later took third in the 200 breaststroke, stopped the clock at 1:05.35 before Reid hit the wall in 1:06.38.
Other top-five individual finishes for the Lions included Stephanie Horwtiz' fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:56.77), Kristen Clarno's 2:07.74 to finish fourth in the 200 backstroke, and Kailee Mora's 59.14 in the 100 butterfly (fifth).
LMU's 200 freestyle relay of Mora, Lauren Saylor, Magnuson and Clarno managed a third-place finish to start Saturday's events, teaming for a time of 1:38.18. The Lions, namely Stacy Maier, Dekar, Calton and Clarno, also finished third in the 400 medley relay, registering a time of 3:58.63. LMU finished the day with a second-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay as Clarno, Calton, Magnuson and Soule hit the water for the final time on Saturday. The quartet posted a time of 3:33.51, finishing behind Fresno State, which won all three of the relays on Saturday.
LMU will return to action on January 25 when it travels to Stockton, Calif. to swim against Pacific and UC Santa Barbara. That meet is scheduled for 11 a.m.
