The LMU swimming team finished in third place at the 2012 Beach Cup on Saturday, posting a total of 226 points. San Diego won the event with 342 points to best Fresno State at 285 for first place. LMU did manage to defeat Pepperdine in the standings, as the Waves collected just 66 total points over the two-day event. With the win, LMU earned a point in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup standings.
Senior Tammy Choy led LMU on Saturday, winning both the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Choy turned in a time of 59.14 in the 100 backstroke before logging a time of 2:06.23 to win the 200 backstroke. Noe Vargas was second to touch for LMU in both races, finishing fifth in the 100 at 1:00.98 and third in the 200 at 2:09.42.
San Diego picked up Saturday where it left off on Friday, winning the 200 freestyle relay behind a strong performance from Francesca Finucane, Melissa Andruzzi, Kelly Stone and Jacquie Kimmel at 1:37.06. LMU's Kjirsten Magnuson, Noe Vargas, Sophie Allen and Camille Hopp combined to post a time of 1:38.41, earning second place and 14 points toward the LMU total.
The Toreros went 1-2-3 in the 400 individual medley as Keenan Lineback touched the wall in 4:26.98 to win the event. Mary Kate Short finished sixth for the Lions, stopping the clock at 4:45.01. It was a similar story in the 100 butterfly, as San Diego earned first and second when Kimmel and Stone logged times of 58.76 and 58.82, respectively. Angelina Prat and Yvonne Le claimed fourth and fifth for LMU, registering times of 1:01.44 and 1:01.54, in that order.
Katie Rick managed to finish in the top-three of the 100 breaststroke, turning in a time of 1:10.49 behind a pair of Fresno State swimmers. Michelle Dockendorf and Britney Vogel shared first place, as both registered times of 1:07.86.
After LMU took home fifth place in the 400 medley relay, Terry Rinder
entered the water as the lone Lion to compete in the 1650 freestyle event. Rinder found herself in a tight race toward the middle of the pack, edging Pepperdine's Madison Krall for fourth place at 18:22.57. San Diego's Keenan Lineback won the distance event with a time of 17:12.01.
Freshman Magnuson earned six more points for the Lions when she finished third in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.32. The race proved tight, as Finucane took top honors with a mark of 52.61, followed by teammate Sarah Geerdes (53.02). After finishing third in the 100 breaststroke, Rick returned to the water and placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke. The sophomore registered a time of 2:28.90, while San Diego's Andruzzi won the race in 2:21.65.
USD finished the Beach Cup strong by winning the final four events, including the 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay. Eleanor Phillips (2:05.89) won the 200 butterfly, while Prat was the first to touch for LMU. The sophomore finished third in a time of 2:12.14. After the Toreros posted a time of 3:32.34 to win the 400 freestyle relay, LMU's quartet of Vargas, Magnuson, Hopp and Rick teamed to place second in 3:36.41.
The Lions return to action on January 28 when they hit the road to compete against Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Baptist in Bakersfield, Calif. at 1:00 p.m.
