Lions Split Double Dual Meet on Senior Day
The LMU swimming team split a double dual with CSUB and Cal Baptist.

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The LMU swimming team split a double dual meet on Saturday at LMU's Burns Aquatics Center, falling to CSU Bakersfield and defeating Cal Baptist. The Roadrunners defeated the Lions by a count of 151-137 and took down the Lancers, 195-103. The Roadrunners benefitted from 26 points in the diving competition against the Lions. LMU did manage to defeat Cal Baptist by a score of 181-106. On the men's side, CSUB defeated Cal Baptist by a score of 186-108.
LMU won five events, including a pair of victories from senior Sophie Allen in the 100 (season-best 58.41) and 200 backstroke (2:07.24). Allen was one of four seniors lauded prior to competition as part of Senior Day. LMU also bid adieu to Camille Hopp, Stephanie Hess and Noelani Vargas.
Hopp, Allen and Hess each swam on LMU's winning 200 medley relay team to start competition, while Hopp claimed an individual victory with a time of 24.00 in the 50 freestyle. Vargas had an impressive swim in the 100 backstroke, taking home third at 1:00.55, before earning a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke at 2:10.20 to help LMU to the 1-2 finish in front of CSU Bakersfield. Hopp and Hess helped LMU to a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke, as Rachel Dekar won the event in 1:05.20 followed by Hopp (1:05.25) and Hess (1:08.10).
In addition to the 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke, LMU also managed the same feat in the 200 breaststroke. Dekar once again won the event in 2:21.51, followed by Katie Rick (2:26.29) and Hess (2:26.89).
With the meet still undecided between LMU and CSUB headed into the finale of the 400 freestyle relay, LMU went 2-3 as Hopp, Allen, Vargas and Kristen Clarno teamed for a mark of 3:33.58. Mary Kate Short, Dekar, Kristen Brennand and Hallie Hengels finished third with a time of 3:36.93.
Other top-three finishes for the Lions included the 200 medley relay from Kjirsten Magnuson, Hengels, Diana Safa and Rick (1:49) for second place, Angelina Prat's season-best 10:45.81 for second place in the 1000 freestyle, Short's second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:11.48), LMU's 2-3 finish in the 200 individual medley as Clarno (2:07.04) and Rick (2:11.63) earned those spots, and Clarno's third-place finish in the 100 freestyle (53.18).
LMU will return to action on February 2 when it travels to Santa Barbara, Calif. to swim against UCSB and Pacific at Noon.
