Lions Finish First at PCSC Pentathlon

The LMU swimming team turned in a number of solid times on Saturday, including posting three first-place finishes, en route to winning the 2013 PCSC Pentathlon at LMU's Burns Aquatics Center. LMU swam against seven other schools on Saturday, posting 713 points to easily outdistance Cal Baptist in second at 444.

Hannah Calton, Kjirsten Magnuson and Kristen Clarno each earned first-place finishes. LMU finished second and third (of 32 participants) in the long medley pentathlon, as Clarno finished second in front of Calton (third). Magnuson was LMU's top finisher in the short medley, claiming third of 33, while Katie Rick placed second out of 47 entrants in the freestyle pentathlon.

Calton finished the day with a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly, a third-place finish in the 200 IM (2:11.36), and a fifth-place finish in the 100 freestyle (54.63). Her 57.02 time in the 100 butterfly was the third-fastest in LMU history.

Magnuson claimed her first-place finish in the 50 butterfly, stopping the clock at 26.03. The native of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho also managed a second-place finish in the 50 backstroke (26.62) to help LMU to a 2-3-4 finish in the event. Freshmen Kailee Mora (27.98) and Tess Brown (28.26) finished third and fourth, respectively. Magnuson rounded-out the solid day with a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle (24.60) and a fourth-place finish in the 100 IM (1:02.51).

Clarno had a stellar day in the pool overall, winning the 100 backstroke in 59.53, while taking second in the 200 IM (2:09.31) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.10) and 100 freestyle (54.16).

Rick, who won last year's freestyle pentathlon, finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:58.02), fourth in the 25 freestyle (11.67), and fourth in the 100 freestyle (54.53) en route to second overall in the competition.

Including the 50 backstroke, Mora managed four top-five finishes on Saturday, earning third-place finishes in the 50 breaststroke (32.62) and 100 IM (1:00.93), and a fourth-place finish in the 50 butterfly (26.71). As she did in the 50 backstroke, Brown followed close behind Mora in the 50 fly, turning in a time of 26.74 to earn fifth.

LMU swam well in the longest event of the day, the 500 freestyle, placing three swimmers in the top-five of the event. Mary Kate Short was the top Lion finisher in second place at 5:14.12, followed by Angelina Prat in third (5:15.96) and Stacy Maier in fourth (5:16.46).

LMU managed four other top-five finishes, including a second-place finish from Mary Kate Reid in the 50 breaststroke (32.21), a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle from Stephanie Horwitz (1:59.06), a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke from Stephanie Schuffels (1:10.20) and a fifth-place finish from Maier in the 200 freestyle (1:59.31).

The Lions will return to action on October 25 when it travels to Malibu, Calif. to participate in the Malibu Invitational.
