Strong Start to Season at Malibu Invitational
Five Lions won an individual event over the course of the two-day invitational.
The 2015-16 LMU swim season got off to a strong start this past weekend, as the Lions traveled to the Malibu Invitational and achieved a number of strong early-season times and top-eight finishes.
Five different Lions won an individual event in a very competitive field, led by senior Kristen Brennand (50 freestyle), juniors Hannah Calton (200 butterfly), Kailee Mora (50 butterfly) and Stacy Maier (500 freestyle), and freshman Keara Reilly (1650 freestyle).
Friday -- Distance Events
The Lions placed first, second and sixth in the opening 1650 freestyle event led by freshman Reilly and followed by senior Stephanie Horwitz in second and sophomore Maddie Lipkowitz in sixth. Mora was the sole Lion in the top-eight of the 400 IM, placing sixth. Maier led a 1-2-3 sweep by the Lions in Friday's final event, the 500 freestyle, topping teammate Horwitz and freshman newcomer Lauren Akin.
Saturday -- Mid-Distance Events
LMU record-holder Calton got the morning events off to a good start by winning the 200 butterfly by over three seconds. A pair of Lions placed top-eight in the 200 backstroke that followed with Maier taking sixth and senior Sofia Abrate in seventh. Mora placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke and senior Kristen Clarno made her 2015-16 season debut by taking fourth in the 200 freestyle with Calton also in the top-eight in sixth place.
Saturday -- Sprint Events
50 Yard Events
Mora continued her strong showing by taking the first event of the afternoon session, the 50 butterfly, by over a half of a second. Junior Lia Porcelli Jorgensen and freshman Marley Abbot also placed in the top-eight in sixth and eighth place. Calton and Abrate placed well for the Lions in the 50 backstroke, taking third and fourth, and senior Mary Kate Reid grabbed sixth in the 50 breaststroke. Brennand then swam to victory in the 50 free with Clarno placing sixth.
100 Yard Events
LMU made a strong showing in the 100 backstroke with four Lions placing second through fifth. Clarno led the Lion pack in second followed by Mora, Maier and Calton. Reid had another top-eight placing in the 100 breaststroke taking seventh and Brennand, coming off her victory in the 50 freestyle, captured the runner-up position in the 100 with freshman Isabel Willis taking fifth. In the last event of the competition, Mora wrapped up an outstanding meet by placing second, with Calton taking sixth.
The Lions travel to Phoenix on Friday to compete against Grand Canyon and Seattle University on both Friday and Saturday.
