Dekar Wins 100 Breaststroke, Calton Sets New LMU Record

Senior Rachel Dekar won the 100 breaststroke at the Arena Invitational.

Senior Rachel Dekar and freshman Hannah Calton highlighted a stellar second day in the pool for LMU at the 2013 Arena Invitational on Friday, as Dekar won the 100 breastroke event with a season-best time of 1:02.68, just tenths off her school record mark. Including Dekar's victory, the Lions qualified four swimmers in Championship Final races, including Calton who earned a spot in the Championship Final of the 100 butterfly, taking fourth with a new school-record time of 55.62.

Kristen Clarno placed seventh overall in the 400 individual medley, posting a time of 4:27.21, while Kjirsten Magnuson placed sixth in the 100 backstroke with a personal-best tying 56.35.

In addition to Calton's appearance in the 100 butterfly Championship Final, LMU also put a pair of swimmers in the Bonus Final of the event. Kristen Brennand (57.62) and Kailee Mora (57.61 prelim | 58.05 final) finished 21st and 22nd overall.

Stephanie Horwitz and Stacy Maier each reached evening finals on Friday in the 200 freestyle, with Horwitz finishing 24th overall with a time of 1:54.80 in the Bonus Final. She qualified for the swim via a 1:53.73 in the prelims. Maier reached the Non-Scoring Final with a personal-best preliminary time of 1:55.53 before finishing 32nd overall (1:57.04).

Other individual highlights for the Lions included Katie Rick's personal-best time of 1:06.29 to place 13th overall in the 100 breaststroke, Mary Kate Reid's personal-best 1:07.22 in the Non-Scoring final of the 100 breaststroke (27th overall), and Lauren Saylor's personal-best time of 1:55.66 in the prelims of the 200 freestyle.



Competition on Friday opened with the 200 medley relay, as LMU's quartet of Magnuson, Dekar, Mora and Rick combined for a time of 1:45 to claim seventh. The 800 freestyle relay was the final event of the day as Angelina Prat, Horwitz, Maier and Saylor teamed to finish 10th overall in 7:45.93.

Saturday marks the final day of competition from the Arena Invitational, with action beginning at 9 a.m. The Lions enter the final day in sixth place overall.
