Feb. 24, 2014
Five LMU swimmers garnered All-MPSF recognition after the 2014 MPSF Championships, including Kjirsten Magnuson who earned first-team honors in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Magnuson broke Camille Hopp's existing freestyle record of 23.24 on Thursday night, swimming a 23.22 in the preliminaries before improving the mark even further in the Championship Final with a 23.13 to claim third overall. She then returned to the water on Friday to break LMU's longest-standing record in the 100 backstroke. The Coeur d'Alene, Idaho product swam a perfect race to eclipse Lauren Mathewson's existing mark by .04, placing second in the race with a 54.90.
Senior Rachel Dekar was also a two-time All-MPSF selection, earning second-team selections in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Dekar finished fourth in the Championship final of the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.49, a "B" qualifying standard swim. She also finished seventh overall in the 200 breaststroke, turning in a time of 2:19.06.
Sophomore Kristen Clarno, who set a new LMU record in the 400 IM (4:24.64), reached the Championship final in the 200 IM, turning in a season-best 2:04.09 to earn her second-team All-MPSF selection.
Freshman Hannah Calton claimed second-team All-MPSF in the 100 butterfly after breaking her own 100 butterfly record in the morning preliminaries with a 55.46, qualifying for the Championship final in which she placed seventh.
Senior Angelina Prat reached the Championship final in the 200 butterfly en route to her second-team All-MPSF selection, stopping the clock in 2:04.33 to take sixth overall.
While individually they all shined at the MPSF Championships, Magnuson, Dekar, Calton and Clarno combined talents on the 400 medley relay to set yet another LMU record (3:45.25) - the fifth of the meet.
