Oct. 11, 2013
The LMU swim team will open the 2013-14 season by hosting the PCSC Pentathlon on Saturday in Burns Aquatics Center. The competition, which begins at 10 a.m., will bring a total of eight schools to LMU, including LMU, Pepperdine, Cal Baptist, Fresno Pacific, Azusa Pacific, Concordia, Biola and Soka on the women's side. Cal Baptist, Fresno Pacific, Concordia and Biola will also compete on the men's side.
The PCSC Pentathlon normally serves as the first real competitive swim for the Lions each year, but this year LMU held a competitive swim of its own on September 29. The Lions held an intrasquad meet to determine who qualified to travel to Alaska for the upcoming November trip against the University of Alaska - Fairbanks. The swimmers who placed first in their events automatically qualified as well as the swimmers with the highest and second-highest points of those not yet qualified.
LMU won the PCSC Pentathlon last year, combining for 730 points and easily outdistancing its nearest competitor, Grand Canyon, at 534. Then-junior Katie Rick provided LMU with 79 points, including a first-place finish and two second-place finishes, while current sophomore Kristen Clarno won three events en route to posting 73 overall points. Rick had an outstanding meet emerging as the overall winner in the freestyle pentathlon. Clarno finished as the runner up in the long medley.
After this Saturday's competition, LMU will return to the water on October 25 at the Malibu Invitational hosted by Pepperdine.
