The LMU swimming team recorded a 3.460 GPA last year, placing 13th out of more than 170 Division I schools who participated last season in swimming and diving, it was announced on CollegeSwimming.com on Tuesday. Yale, coached by Frank Keefe, took the women’s crown with a 3.608 team grade point average, just edging Rick Pratt’s New Mexico State women at 3.566 and Jim Wilson’s Dartmouth women at 3.560.
Dartmouth’s Big Green men had a team GPA of 3.600 to claim the top men’s spot with Yale second at 3.500 and Georgetown, coached by Steve Cartwright, third at 3.376.
Dartmouth took the combined men’s and women’s title with a stunning 3.580 GPA. Yale followed closely with a 3.552 with Lafayette College, coached by Jim Dailey, third in 3.442.
East Coast teams dominated the team rankings, taking the top four spots and eight of the top ten in the combined listings. A total of 125 teams – 81 women’s and 44 men’s -- bettered the minimum team GPA requirement of 3.000.
The Division I women, fast in the water, excelled just as spectacularly in the classroom, with 91 women earning individual Academic All-American honors by achieving a GPA of 3.500 or higher and qualifying for the NCAA Championships. 31 men also earned AAA honors.
24 women and four men scored a perfect 4.000 grade point average. Moreover, Richard Quick’s Auburn Tigers had an amazing nine student-athletes – six women and three men – with perfect 4.0’s.
Texas A&M had three 4.0’s while George, Minnesota and SMU had two each, all women.
