Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount swimming will open its home season Saturday when the Lions host Pepperdine and Cal State Northridge for the third annual LMU Pentathlon. The three-team competition begins at 10:00 a.m. at Burns Aquatic Center.
For the third straight year, LMU, Pepperdine, and Cal State Northridge will compete in the Pentathlon, with each swimmer individually entering one of the three competitions: the short medley, long medley, or freestyle. Each competition includes five races, with the swimmers' times being added from each of their five races. Within each competition, the swimmer with the lowest time will be declared the winner. Awards are give to the top-10 swimmers in each competition.
"This will give us a good `first look' at our freshmen swimmers in head-to-head competition against our cross-town rivals," LMU Head Coach Bonnie Adair said. "It's really the last of our fun, early season meets before next week's very competitive Speedo Cup in Long Beach."
In both the 2004 and 2005 LMU Pentathlons, LMU has won two of three competition titles. In 2005, the titles went to Katie Hicks (short medley) and Maggie Brophy (freestyle). The previous season, it was Angela Samuels (short medley) and Brophy (freestyle). Liz Magura was the top Lion finisher in the distance medley at both the 2004 and 2005 Pentathlons.
In 2005, Hicks earned the short medley crown with a total time of 2:53.01 after winning the 100 IM (1:00.53) and the 50 free (24.63). Brophy claimed the freestyle competition title for the second straight year with a total time of 14:57.30 (14:57.80 in 2004). Within her competition, Brophy won the 200 free (1.55.97) and the 500 free (5:09.89).
The Pentathlon will be the first of four home dates for the Lions. LMU will also host three dual meets with Northern Arizona (Dec.18), Alaska Fairbanks (Jan.4), and Pepperdine (Jan.20).
