Lions Fall to Aztecs, 5-2

SAN DIEGO, CA - The 69th-ranked Loyola Marymount women's tennis team lost to No. 50 San Diego State Wednesday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center, 5-2. The Lions struggled throughout the afternoon, with SDSU sweeping in doubles and winning four of the six singles matches.

"We lost a tough match today to another ranked team," head coach Jamie Sanchez said. "We played partially to our potential in doubles, but we struggled in singles. We are going to have to have a breakthrough soon in order to get on track."

San Diego State swept the Lions in doubles play, with Pavla Mesterova and Tamara Tanner losing to Kitts/Nielsen, 8-5 at the No. 1 slot. Tina Razloznik and Jasmin Heckel fell at No. 2 to Bagshaw/Krausova, 8-5, and Audrey Bulkley and Bliss Nixon were defeated by the Aztec duo of Trunk/Cadua, 8-5.

In singles action, Mesterova got her first victory of the season, beating Julia Trunk in three sets at the No. 1 position (6-3, 3-6, 6-4). At No. 3, Razloznik was also victorious, taking the win from Ellie Krausova in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. In other singles play, Tanner lost to Holly Bagshaw (6-3, 6-4), Heckel was defeated by Esther Cadua (6-3, 6-2), Bulkley lost to Milana Yusupov, 6-1, 7-6 (4), and freshman Shauna Morgan fell to Sissie Nielsen in two sets (6-1, 6-3).

With the loss, LMU is 15-2 all-time against San Diego State, and moves to 0-4 on the season.

The Lions will return to the courts on Friday, Feb. 8, when they host Sacramento State at 1:30 p.m.
