Women's Tennis Claims 5-2 Victory

The Lions knock off defending Atlantic-10 Champion Temple in the final match of an east coast swing.

WILLIAMSBURG, VA (February 15, 2004)-Loyola Marymount University's 63rd ranked women's tennis team defeated Temple, 5-2, Sunday at the College of William and Mary's McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

The win was the first of the season for the Lions as they improve to 1-2 on the year. The two loses were to a pair of top-20 programs. The Owls drop to 1-2 to start the year.

Temple won at first and third doubles to take the team doubles point, but LMU recovered in singles, winning the first five completed matches to clinch the win. Three of the six matches went to a third set as sophomore Patrycia Hubl finished her match 6-1, 6-1 over Jennifer Goeta.

Next to finish was sophomore Serena Fermin, claiming a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jackie Sy at number six singles. Freshman Kimi Kaloi was the next to finish with a 6-4, 6-2 win at number three singles. The win by Kaloi gave the Lions a 3-1 lead.

Senior Jennifer Baker then earned the win for the Lions with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Laura Seiverling at number four singles. Junior Carla Arguelles then took the win at number one doubles to give LMU a 5-1 lead thanks to a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 win over Danira Penic.

Robyn Baker dropped a heartbreaker in the final match to finish at number two singles. She fell to Ana Maslesa 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-2.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday, February 18 at No. 29 San Diego State.
