Los Angeles, CA - The No. 71 Loyola Marymount University women's tennis team defeated UC Santa Barbara 6-1 Saturday afternoon, battling high winds as well as the Gauchos on the LMU Tennis Courts.
The Lions (6-7) opened the match with a sweep in the doubles competitions to take the doubles point. Julie Hladik and Edit Pakay, who matched up at No. 2 in doubles play, swept Shiho Fukishima and Chelsea Dillon 8-0. Andrea Lord and Angelina Zdorovytska defeated Cindy Ammann and Uzma Khan at No. 1 8-2. Penka Fileva and Jessica Placencia paired up for the No. 3 doubles match, defeating Amanda Pazornik and Myriah Fitzgibbon, 8-2.
UCSB was able to take the No. 1 singles point in the match, however, as Khan, ranked at 83rd in the nation in singles, defeated Lord in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Pakay took her match at No. 2 in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) over Ammann. The Lions dominated the rest of the singles with Fileva at No. 3 defeating Dillon in straight sets (6-2, 6-0). Zdorovytska took her match at No. 4 in the singles' lineup in two (6-2, 6-1) over Fukushima. Hladik played at No.5 defeating Pazornik in two (6-0, 6-1). Placencia rounded out the singles for the Lions with a straight-set win over Fitzgibbon (6-1, 6-0).
Next the Lions travel to Long Beach to face the 49ers on Wed., March 20 at 2:00 p.m.
