LMU wins 5-2 for their second straight team victory.
March 16, 2013
LOS ANGELES -- The LMU women's tennis team continued their dominance at home this season, with a 5-2 win over New Mexico Saturday to improve to 4-1 at home and 5-5 overall. With the loss, the Lobos drop to 5-7 on the year.
The win marks the Lions' second in a row to even the team at .500. Saturday's match was the first of seven in a row at the LMU Tennis Center, where the team has excelled all spring.
In the doubles round, the decision came down to the wire. Miya Jin and Reka Rohonyi took care of business right away, winning their doubles match 8-4 and finishing first. After a New Mexico win on Court 3, the doubles point would be decided on Court 1. April Bisharat and Claudia Razzeto looked to be in control early with a 4-1 advantage before the Lobos duo won the next five points to take a 6-4 lead. The Lions would bounce back before bringing the score to an 8-8 tie to force a tiebreaker. In the end, it was the LMU pair that prevailed for the 9-8 win to clinch the point for the Lions.
While play was close in doubles, there were no questions when it came to the singles round. The Lions won on four of the six courts to earn the 5-2 victory. Rohonyi and Razzeto won quickly on courts 5 and 2, respectively each winning 6-2, 6-2. Next, Kristine Kouyoumjian won 6-1, 6-1 on Court 4 to clinch the team victory for the Lions. Also winning Saturday for the Lions was Bisharat, who defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-3 on Court 1.
The Lions continue their home stand next Thursday when they take on Princeton at 1:30 p.m.
