LOS ANGELES -- The No. 61 LMU women’s tennis team opened up WCC play Thursday with a 5-2 setback to Santa Clara at home. The Lions drop to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while Santa Clara improves to 7-5 overall and 3-0 in conference. The result ends the Lions four-match win streak and drops the Lions to 6-2 at home.
The Broncos got off on the right foot with a win in the doubles round. Santa Clara won on Courts 1 and 2 to clinch the doubles point. LMU’s Tory Parravi and Kristine Kouyoumjian won their match on Court 3, but the result would not make a difference in the doubles decision.
In singles, the Lions would win two key matches. On Court 1, April Bisharat came from a set down to defeat Santa Clara’s Katie Le, who is ranked No. 28 in the nation for singles. The 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win marks Bisharat’s biggest win on the season and the highlight of the day for the Lions. This was Bisharat’s fourth win in her last five matches and is her second consecutive win after dropping the first set.
On Court 5, Kouyoumjian would win her match as well, by a score of 7-6, 6-1. But the Lions would fall on the other four courts, giving Santa Clara the 5-2 win. This win marks the freshman’s eighth in a row for singles play, the longest streak on the team by far.
The Lions will continue their home stand with another conference match Saturday at 11:00 a.m. when they take on San Francisco.
