Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount women's tennis picked up its first West Coast Conference victory with a 5-2 win over Saint Mary's Saturday at the LMU Tennis Center. The Lions (8-11, 1-2 WCC) handed Saint Mary's, who had been ranked as high as 56th in the nation, its first WCC loss.
"This was one of the toughest matches we have played all season," Head Coach Jamie Sanchez said. "Saint Mary's came out fired up and took a lead in every set, starting with the doubles. It is truly a tribute to the tough matches that we have played all year."
The LMU toughness started during doubles play, as the Lions swept all three doubles matches to take the 1-0 lead.
Pavla Mesterova (No. 1) and Maja Sundac (No. 5) made it 3-0 with straight-set singles wins. Mesterova's 6-2, 6-1 win came over Aude Lambert, who had just moved into the national rankings this week at the 124th spot in singles. The win was the 23rd singles win this season for Mesterova.
Team captain Patrycia Hubl fought back after losing the first set to clinch the win for the Lions with LMU's fourth point of the afternoon.
At the No. 3 spot, freshman Sladjana Kos also won two straight sets after dropping the first to make it 5-2.
The Lions will not play any mid-week matches next week, but will remain at home to host 38th-ranked Florida International next Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
