Portland, Ore. - After dropping the doubles point and the first two singles matches, the LMU women's tennis team was down 3-0 to Portland with four courts left to play. With their back against the wall, the Lions won on all four remaining courts to steal the match 4-3 in a thriller at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
After Portland took the doubles point, singles play would be split up into two rounds because the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center only has three courts. Portland's top two singles players would win the first two matches to give the Pilots a 3-0 lead. And on the third court, UP's Jelena Lazarevic took the first set. But LMU's Miya Jin would battle back to win the second and third set in a huge comeback. The 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 win on Court 3 gave the Lions their first point and a swing of momentum heading into the final three matches.
On Court 4, LMU's Lauri Mueller defeated Saroop Dhatt 6-1, 7-5 to give the Lions their second point. On Court 5, Reka Rohonyi knocked off Tori Troesch 6-1, 6-3 to even the team score at 3-3. And clinching the come from behind team win for LMU would be Ellie Grossman on the final court, where she beat Marina Reimers 6-3, 6-2.
The victory gives LMU their first win in West Coast Conference play this season. Portland falls to 1-3 in conference and 5-6 overall, while the Lions improve to 1-4 in the WCC and 7-11 overall. Their next match is tomorrow at Gonzaga at 12:00p.m.
