FULLERTON, Calif. -- The LMU women’s tennis team carried its success last weekend into the midweek as the Lions defeated Cal State Fullerton 5-2 for their third straight win on Wednesday. It was the final non-conference match of the year for the Lions as the team will end the season with four consecutive WCC matchups starting Friday.

With the win, the No. 71 Lions improve to 10-7 on the year, remaining at 2-2 in conference play, while the Titans dropped to 10-12 on the year and are 3-4 in the Big West.

Doubles play was very tight and would set the tone for the whole match. The Titans won quickly on Court 3 with an 8-1 victory. Then on Court 1, LMU’s Miya Jin and Reka Rohonyi outlasted their opponents for a 9-8 win to tie things up. The doubles point would then be decided on Court 2, where Kristine Kouyoumjian and Tory Parravi found themselves in a close one. With the score at 8-8, the match went into a nail-biting tiebreaker. Coming from behind and saving match point, the Lions would prevail for a 9-8 win to clinch the doubles point.

The intensity and excitement from the doubles round helped LMU bring momentum into singles play, where LMU would put it away early. The Lions would win on the top four courts for the 5-2 team win, with the first four matches to finish all in favor of LMU.

On Court 4, Rohonyi won a quick 6-2, 6-1 match over her opponent. Next to finish was Parravi on Court 1, who won 6-3, 6-0. Jin then clinched the team win for the Lions with a 6-1, 6-3 win on Court 3.

The final win of the day came from Kouyoumjian, who was playing on Court 2 for the first time after playing on Court 3 for the first time in the Lions’ previous match. The freshman would continue her dominance and her streak, winning for the 12th singles match in a row in 6-3, 6-2 fashion.

The Lions return to WCC play this weekend on the road. Their next match is at San Diego on Friday, April 12.
