Los Angeles, Calif. - The LMU women's tennis team dropped a tough 4-0 match to the No. 43 Saint Mary's Gaels on Sunday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Center. After defeating Pacific 5-2 on Friday, the Lions went 1-1 on the weekend to conclude their final home matches of the season. LMU drops to 2-6 in West Coast Conference play and 8-13 overall, while Saint Mary's improves to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in the WCC.
Before the match began, three seniors were honored for the final home contest of the year. Former player and current student assistant coach Claudia Razzeto, seniors Miya Jin and Reka Rohonyi were all acknowledged for graduating this year.
In the doubles round, the Court 1 match wrapped up first, where LMU's Miya Jin and Jessica Perez gave the Lions an early lead. The Lion duo won 8-5 over Saint Marys' Jenny Jullien and Parminder Kuar for 11th doubles win on the season on the top court. But the Gaels would answer quickly when Court 2 ended with an 8-1 score in favor of Saint Mary's. This brought the round to the final match in play on Court 3, where LMU's Reka Rohonyi and Kristine Kouyoumjian were squared off against Jamie Pawid and Catherine Leduc. With the match tied at 7-7, Saint Mary's would pull away to win the match and clinch the doubles point, giving the Gaels a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In singles, Saint Mary's took their momentum from doubles and kept it moving through singles. The No. 10 singles player in the country, Jenny Jullien, won 6-1, 6-0 on Court 1 for Saint Mary's to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead early in the round. Next to finish was Court 6, where Saint Marys' Parminder Kaur defeated Ellie Grossman 6-3, 6-1. Clinching the match for Saint Mary's was Jade Frampton who won 6-4, 6-0 on Court 5. At this point, the remaining courts would stop play and Saint Mary's would earn a 4-0 sweep. On Court 4, LMU's Lauri Mueller was ahead 7-5, 2-1 when her match was stopped and Jessica Perez had just come back to win the second set on Court 2 when her court went unfinished.
The Lions next match will be Wednesday at Pepperdine for their final regular season match of the season.
