San Diego, Calif. -- The LMU women's tennis team sent six players to the annual San Diego St. Fall Tennis Classic over the weekend, showcasing some of the team's new talent in the team's first official tournament of the year.
In addition to host team San Diego St., the Lions were amongst the University of San Diego, Pepperdine, Grand Canyon University, Duke, and New Mexico St.
Of the six Lions competing at the Aztec Tennis Center over the weekend, five were either freshmen or transfer students, with junior Logan Finnell as the lone LMU veteran. This means that many of the team's new additions were playing their first matches as LMU Lions and for the freshmen, their first matches as collegiate athletes.
Standing out for LMU was the doubles team of freshman Jessica Perez and sophomore Ellie Grossman. Competing in the Doubles Red division, the LMU newcomers defeated a pair from conference rival Pepperdine 8-7 (5) in the opening round. After an 8-1 setback in the second round to a team from Duke, the Lions bounced back in the consolation bracket for an 8-5 win over a team for WCC opponent San Diego.
Perez also found a bit of success in singles play. After dropping a tough match to Yuki Chiang of Pepperdine in the opening round of the Singles Red division, Perez went on to defeat Maria Stojanovic of San Diego 6-3, 6-3.
Also picking up a singles win for the Lions was Julia Norlin. Despite falling in a close 6-2, 7-5 contest with Ashvarya Shrivastav of New Mexico St., Norlin went on to beat San Diego St.'s Doran Somoracz 6-2, 6-4 in the consolation bracket.
