Oct. 9, 2017

Senior Anna Romeka highlighted another strong weekend of play from LMU women's tennis, winning Flight D of singles from the 2017 Beach Tennis Fall Tournament over the weekend. Romeka wasn't the only Lion to win a championship match, as Elvira Juravliova and Camila Tumosa teamed to win the Doubles B bracket.

Romeka won the championship by way of victories over Autum Prudhomme (Grand Canyon), Ashley Knecht (PSU), Gillian Parker (UCI) and Kylie Waschuk (Grand Canyon). The native of Monterey, Calif. did not drop a set in the tournament, ultimately defeating Waschuk in the final, 6-2, 6-0.

Juravliova and Tumosa defeated Maher/Valk in the opening round before knocking off UCI's Tsodikova/Tillbury to advance to face Waschuk/Etienne. The Lion pair had little trouble, defeating Grand Canyon's duo, 6-0, to reach the final against Miksovska/Mylonas of Washington State. There, LMU captured the 6-3 victory.

As a singles player, Juravliova made it to the final match of the Singles A Flight, falling to Tiffany Mylonas of Washington State, 6-0, 7-6 (11). Juravliova had defeated opponents from Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and Washington State to advance to the final.

Similarly, Tumosa entered into the Flight C of singles, reaching the final match before dropping the contest, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, to Genevieve Zeidan of Cal State Fullerton. Tumosa had previously defeated Bianca Bostrom (Montana), Jacqueline Tsodikova (UC Irvine) and Melisa Ates (Washington State) to reach the final.

Siobhan Anderson competed in Flight B of singles, defeating Danielle Garrido of UCI, 6-1, 6-1, but Anderson eventually dropped a hard-fought match to Aneta Miksovska of Washington State, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Prior to playing in her flight, Anderson posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mya Etienne of Grand Canyon.

Despite dropping the first match in the Doubles A Flight, Anderson and Romeka managed to win the Consolation Final. The duo dropped the opener, 6-2, to Dinkelmeyer/Elhadj (CSUN) before defeating Prudhomme/Lo Pumo (GCU), 6-1. UC Riverside’s Dulay/Elpusan were next, as LMU dispatched the pair 6-1 to reach the final against Buhr/Occhipinti (GCU). There, Anderson and Romeka posted a 6-2 victory.

Competing in extra matches at the tournament, Sofiya Gaisina and Yesica De Lucas each posted singles victories. Gaisina defeated Lo Pumo of Grand Canyon, 6-1, 6-2, while De Lucas bested Bostom of Montana, 6-1, 6-2. As a team, the pair dropped a match to Kincaid/Bostrom (Montana), 6-3.

LMU women’s tennis will now prepare for the ITA Regionals beginning on October 19 in San Diego.
