Fullerton, Calif - After splitting their contests the first day, LMU Women's Tennis played well consistently advancing to the quarterfinals in the main draw and semi-finals of the back draw at the Cal State Fullerton Collegiates this weekend.
Leading the Lions in Flight A Singles was Tina Razloznik. Razloznik lost in the quarterfinals of the main draw against Debbie Armstrong from Cal State Long Beach 2-6, 2-6 and ended up 1-1 over the weekend.
After falling in the main draw, sophomore Jasmin Heckel beat a player from Cal State Long Beach 8-2 and then defeated a player from UC Irvine to advance to the semi-finals of the back draw. Heckel eventually fell to another player form UC Irvine 8-3. She also ended up with an even at Fullerton with a 2-2 record.
Audrey Bulkley also won in the back draw. After defeating a player from New Mexico State 8-3, Bulkley fell in the quarterfinals to a player from Cal State Northridge 8-2.
The Junior from Springfield, Illinois ended up with a .500 record of 2-2 on the weekend.
In Flight C Singles Action, Bliss Nixon fell in the quarterfinals of the main draw to Cal Poly's Luis Obispo 4-6, 0-6 and a 2-1 record for the 2008 fall season.
Sophomore Shauna Morgan advanced to the main draw semi finals of Flight C singles and defeated a player from Southern Utah in the first round 6-0, 6-0. The sophomore from Las Vegas then advanced to the quarterfinals where she defeated a player from UC Irvine 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Cal Poly's Luis Obispo seemed to have LMU's number in Flight C singles as she defeated Shauna Morgan in the semifinals 6-2, 6-3 and a 2-1 record overall for the tournament.
The Lions improved in Flight A doubles. The team of Jane Pringle
and Bliss Nixon
beat a Cal State Fullerton team in the back draw 8-2. Pringle and Nixon then faced a team from Cal Poly team that included Luis Obispo and once again lost 8-3 for a 1-2 record at Cal State Fullerton.
Tina Razloznik and Shauna Morgan also defeated a team from host Cal State Fullerton (8-3) in the back draw of Flight A doubles. Razloznik and Morgan advanced to the semis before losing to a tough Cal State Long Beach team 8-5 and ended the weekend with a 1-2 record.
Jasmin Heckel and Audrey Bulkley played in the quarterfinals of the main draw of Flight B doubles. Heckel and Bulkley lost against a team from New Mexico State 8-2 in the quarterfinals ending the Intercollegiates with a 1-1 record in the fall opener.
"This was our first tournament of the year and the overall results were beneficial for us to assess what we need to do to improve for our next tournament." Coach Jamie Sanchez said.
LMU's women's tennis will head to San Diego for the ITA Regional's. The Lions will play in the tournament October 23 - 26.
