March 15, 2007
Los Angeles, CA (March 15) - The month of March is Women's History Month and Loyola Marymount University will be hosting events all month in celebration of Women's History. LMU Athletics will participate in that celebration with a special event on Monday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of Gersten Pavilion titled "Title IX: A Celebration of Equality in LMU Athletics."
This is the 35th anniversary of Title IX, legislation passed in 1972 that laid the foundation for the availability, quality and kind of benefits and opportunities women athletes have in today's world of collegiate athletics. Part of that celebration is the 30-year history of women's tennis at LMU, the longest running varsity program at the University.
The presentation will feature a distinguished panel of speakers who have had a great impact on women and their participation in athletics at LMU. Included in the speakers will be Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Lane Bove, Women's Tennis Head Coach Jamie Sanchez and Senior Associate Director of Athletics Betty Werner.
All three will speak of more than 100 years of combined experience in athletics and specifically their experiences in bringing opportunities to women in collegiate athletics. The program will begin at 6:30 p.m.
