Sept. 26, 2003
Los Angeles, CA - The Loyola Marymount women's tennis team finished the 2002-03 season ranked No. 57 in the ITA national rankings. The Lions now get ready to compete in three fall tournaments in order to gear up for their rigorous spring schedule.
At the helm of the program once again is Jamie Sanchez who is entering his 29th season at LMU. Assisting Sanchez for the second year is Adam Brewer. Sanchez' second assistant is no stranger to the program as she played for him for four years, Penka Fileva.
The Lions first test of the fall season comes next weekend at the 2003 Brown Invitational Tennis Tournament. The tournament will be held on Friday, Oct. 3 through Sunday, Oct. 5 at the Brown University Outdoor and Indoor Tennis courts in Providence, Rhode Island. Competing in this year's Invitational with LMU is Boston College, Boston University, Seton Hall Syracuse, Temple, No.53 Yale and tournament host No.66 Brown.
Fall tournaments are a good way for the Lions to get back in the swing of things before their actual spring competitions. This year, more than anything, it will be learning experience for the young 2003-04 Lion squad which features six newcomers.
Carla Arguelles, Robyn Baker, Serena Fermin, Erin Ivey, Kimi Kaloi and Tamara Tanner join only four veterans that return from last year's squad. Jennifer Baker, Patrycia Hubl, Erin Sanchez and Diana Vinis will be the looked up to provide leadership both on and off the court for coach Sanchez.
Following the Brown Invitational, LMU will also participate in the UC Irvine Invitational Oct. 11-13 and the ITA Regional Tournament in San Diego, Calif., Oct. 23-26.
