LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
Saturday's 2011 LMU volleyball Alumnae Match connected former Lion greats with the current squad of the Lions as the team prepares to open the season next weekend by hosting the Four Points by Sheraton LA Westside Invitational. The current team defeated the Alumnae in straight sets, 25-14, 25-14, 27-25.
The Alumnae team, led by former men's volleyball player Lindsey Breeden, included Mardell Wrensch (1992-95), Tracy Holman (1994-97), Sarah Noriega (1994-97), Lydia Day (1996-99), Allison Gustorf (1997-00), Kristen Gallup (1999-02), Laura Gustorf (1999-02), Kealani Kimball (2000-03), Jody Carlson (2001-04), Jacene Dimson (2001-04), Kelli Nerison (2001-04), Nicole Oehlman (2000-04), Dina DeBernardi (2001-05), and Audrey Francis (2004-05).
After the newest Lions took the first two sets by a commanding tally of 25-14, the Alumnae came roaring back in the third. The two teams played even throughout the set, including to ties at points 22 to 25. Unfortunately for the former greats, the current squad managed to end the match in three sets, earning the decisive point on a Kenna Crouse kill.
Following the match, Head Coach Tom Black invited the Alumnae to LMU's newest building, the Lions Athletic Center, for a post-match reception. There, Black had the current Lions introduce themselves individually before the former Lions followed suit. The event ended with Dimson speaking on behalf of the entire volleyball alumnae base to wish the 2011 squad a great season and a few choice words of advice.
The Lions begin the 2011 season on Friday when they host Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m.
