The LMU volleyball team (2-1) succumb to its first loss of the 2012 season, dropping a three-set match to UC Santa Barbara (2-1) by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-22, in the Tournament Championship match of the DoubleTree Los Angeles Westside Invitational. The Lions, who hit .389 over the first two matches of the year, managed just a .067 clip in the loss.

Much of the credit belongs to UC Santa Barbara's defense, as the Gauchos posted 12 team blocks, including seven block assists from Jenna Wilson and six more from Katey Thompson. UCSB libero Taylor Formico shined on Saturday night, recording 26 of UCSB's 66 digs to keep the ball off the floor. Offensively, Leah Sully paced the UCSB attack with a match-best 14 kills, teaming the mark with 11 digs for a double-double. Setter Ali Santi also recorded a double-double, pairing 27 assists with 17 digs.

Junior Kathleen Luft continued a solid start to her LMU career, posting 12 kills and two block assists, while sophomore Litara Keil proved to be LMU's leading attacker in terms of percentage, hitting .214 with 11 kills on 28 swings. Freshman setter Hannah Tedrow recorded 30+ digs for the third time in as many matches, dishing-out 31 assists.

The reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Year, Betsi Metter, posted a match-best 28 digs against the Gauchos - her best mark this year and the second-most in a three-set match for LMU since 1998. The 28 digs fell just one short of Metter's three-set performance against Portland on October 27 of last year.

LMU will return to action on Friday, August 31, when it hosts Colgate at 12 p.m. in Gersten Pavilion.
